Biographical summary
Angela M. Donaldson, M.D., is a fellowship-trained otolaryngologist and head of Rhinology and Skull Base Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. She is an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology and serves as associate program director of the Otolaryngology (ENT)/Head and Neck Surgery Residency Program and vice chair of research for otolaryngology.
Dr. Donaldson's expertise lies in treating difficult-to-manage cases of sinus and nasal disease, including chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS), aspirin exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) and inverted papilloma. She also specializes in minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant tumors of the skull base and sinuses.
As a researcher, Dr. Donaldson focuses on inflammatory diseases of the nose and sinuses. She is also interested in how skull base surgery changes olfaction (sense of smell) and how those changes may affect cognition (thinking).
Dr. Donaldson is driven by her passion for providing individualized care for patients limited by chronic sinus disease. She has received Mayo Clinic's Patient Experience Provider Recognition Award multiple times.
"The fact that I can perform an operation and change someone's quality of life, their productivity and their energy to take care of themselves and their families is what drives me," says Dr. Donaldson. "I believe the needs of the patient come first. For me, that involves getting to know each patient and their family and really diving deep into finding the best treatment option for that person."
Dr. Donaldson earned her medical degree and completed her residency in otolaryngology — head and neck surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. She pursued fellowship training in rhinology and endoscopic skull base surgery at Weill Cornell Medicine.
Dr. Donaldson is recognized for her dedication to advancing the field of otolaryngology and the role of females in medicine. She is on the executive board of the Ignite Med program, which focuses on coaching and mentorship for female medical students. She has been a member of the American Academy of Otolaryngology — Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) since 2018. She has served on several
committees and is chair of the Rhinology and Paranasal Sinus Education Committee. In 2025, AAO-HNS presented Dr. Donaldson with the Honor Award for outstanding service to the organization.
When Dr. Donaldson is not treating patients, teaching or engaged in research, she enjoys Pilates, weight training, traveling the world and learning about international cuisine.
