Dr. Navreet Malhi Chowla is a board-certified gastroenterologist and clinician-educator at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she serves as Assistant Professor of Medicine and Senior Associate Consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. With twenty-five years of clinical experience, she brings exceptional depth and breadth to the practice of consultative gastroenterology and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) care.
Dr. Chowla's clinical practice encompasses both outpatient consultative gastroenterology and inpatient GI consultation services, with procedural expertise in colonoscopy for colon cancer screening, surveillance, and IBD management, as well as upper endoscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions.
Her clinical and scholarly work is anchored in the comprehensive management of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, and she has developed particular expertise in an emerging and complex area of oncologic care: the diagnosis and management of immune-mediated gastrointestinal toxicities. This includes immune checkpoint inhibitor-related enterocolitis and the gastrointestinal adverse effects associated with CAR-T cell and other immune effector cell therapies. Working closely with medical oncology, hematology, and cellular therapy teams, Dr. Chowla integrates endoscopic, histologic, and clinical data to guide timely, individualized treatment decisions for patients experiencing these challenging complications.
A committed advocate for holistic, patient-centered care, Dr. Chowla collaborates with a GI-specialized dietitian, clinical psychologist and physical therapists to address the nutritional, psychological, and lifestyle dimensions of gastrointestinal disease. Her multidisciplinary approach reflects a conviction that optimal outcomes arise from bridging specialties and disciplines in service of the whole patient. Her research interests span real world effectiveness of IBD therapies, immunotherapy related enterocolitis, and educational innovation in GI training. She is deeply invested in the development, training and mentoring of the next generation of gastroenterologists.
