Research

Mayo Clinic researchers study epilepsy treatments, including neuromodulation and brain stimulation for drug-resistant epilepsy. Research includes ways to improve seizure control, guide treatment with EEG and MEG biomarkers, optimize stimulation and understand which treatments may work best for different people.

A major area of investigation is pairing VNS with rehabilitation following ischemic stroke, including studies of upper-limb recovery, gait and mobility, cognition, functional brain connectivity, and real-world outcomes with the Vivistim System. Mayo's broader VNS research has extended into metabolic, neurological and behavioral applications. These include epilepsy, glucose metabolism, migraine, post-COVID fatigue, chronic dizziness and smoking cessation. Previous research has evaluated vagal stimulation in the heart.
