Biographical summary
Ian A. Buchanan, M.D., is a neurosurgeon who specializes in the evaluation and treatment of complex spinal disorders. His completion of both neurosurgical and orthopedic spine surgery training brings a multidisciplinary approach that is tailored to patient-specific needs. He has advanced training in spinal robotics, minimally invasive spine surgery, spine tumors, spine trauma, scoliosis, and deformity reconstruction. He is excited to bring this expertise to the Mayo Clinic campus in Florida.
Dr. Buchanan graduated magna cum laude from Williams College before going on to Harvard Medical School where he completed the prestigious Harvard/MIT, Health Sciences and Technology (HST) program. He completed neurosurgery residency at the University of Southern California (USC), serving as chief resident at the Los Angeles County Medical Center in his final year. During his time at USC, he completed an enfolded fellowship in minimally invasive and complex spinal surgery. After residency, Dr. Buchanan completed a combined neurosurgery and orthopedic surgery fellowship in adult and pediatric spinal deformity and
spinal robotics at the Columbia University/ New York-Presbyterian Daniel and Jane Och Spine hospital.
While at USC, Dr. Buchanan received the Michael J. Apuzzo Innovation award for his creativity and innovation as a clinical researcher. His work has been widely published in numerous peer-reviewed journals and he has authored several book chapters. Current research interests include simulation models for advancing resident education, cost-reduction in healthcare and use of machine learning for improving patient outcomes. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and the North American Spine Society.
