Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:

More common

  1. Backache , groin, side, or muscle pain
  2. chest pain
  3. chills
  4. dizziness
  5. fainting
  6. fast heartbeat
  7. fever with increased sweating
  8. flushing
  9. headache
  10. metallic taste
  11. nausea or vomiting
  12. numbness, pain, or tingling of hands or feet
  13. pain or redness at injection site
  14. redness of skin
  15. skin rash or hives
  16. swelling of mouth or throat
  17. troubled breathing

More common

  1. Abdominal or stomach pain
  2. cramping (continuing) or soreness

Less common or rare

  1. Double vision
  2. general unwell feeling
  3. weakness without feeling dizzy or faint

Less common or rare

  1. Chest or throat pain, especially when swallowing
  2. stools with signs of blood (red or black color)

Early symptoms of iron overdose

  1. Diarrhea (may contain blood)
  2. fever
  3. nausea
  4. stomach pain or cramping (sharp)
  5. vomiting, severe (may contain blood)

Late symptoms of iron overdose

  1. Bluish-colored lips, fingernails, and palms of hands
  2. convulsions (seizures)
  3. pale, clammy skin
  4. shallow and rapid breathing
  5. unusual tiredness or weakness
  6. weak and fast heartbeat

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

  1. Constipation
  2. diarrhea
  3. leg cramps
  4. nausea
  5. vomiting

Less common

  1. Darkened urine
  2. heartburn
  3. stained teeth

Other side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional.
