Research

Mayo Clinic is advancing research in retroperitoneal sarcoma through multidisciplinary efforts that combine surgical oncology, translational science and precision medicine. Faculty members are investigating the molecular characteristics of retroperitoneal sarcomas using next-generation sequencing technologies to better understand why these tumors recur after surgical removal and to identify potential new therapeutic targets. This research aims to develop more personalized treatment approaches by integrating genomic information from both the tumor and its microenvironment.

In addition, Mayo Clinic also conducts clinical and translational research focused on sarcoma surgery and treatment sequencing, evaluating strategies that improve outcomes and reduce complications for patients undergoing complex sarcoma resections. Together, these efforts reflect Mayo Clinic's commitment to improving the diagnosis, surgical management and long-term outcomes of patients with retroperitoneal sarcoma through innovative research and multidisciplinary care.

Cancer research is conducted in coordination with Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center. Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center receives funding from the National Cancer Institute and is designated as a comprehensive cancer center. This designation recognizes the institution's scientific excellence and multidisciplinary resources focused on cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

Research: It's all about patients

Joseph Sirven, M.D., Professor of Neurology, Mayo Clinic: Mayo's mission is about the patient. The patient comes first. So the mission and research here is to advance how we can best help the patient, how to make sure the patient comes first in care. So in many ways, it's a cycle. It can start with as simple as an idea worked on in a laboratory, brought to the patient bedside, and if everything goes right — and let's say it's helpful or beneficial — then brought on as a standard approach. And I think that is one of the unique characteristics of Mayo's approach to research — that patient-centeredness — that really helps to put it in its own spotlight.
