Your Mayo Clinic care team
At Mayo Clinic, a multidisciplinary team of specialists work together to evaluate and treat each individual. With 13 specialty groups and more than 140 digestive disease specialists on staff, the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic is one of the largest and most experienced in the world.
Having all this expertise in a single place, focused on you, means that you're not just getting one opinion — your care is discussed among the team. Your test results are available quickly. Appointments are scheduled in coordination. And the most highly specialized hemochromatosis experts in the world are all working together for you.
Advanced diagnosis and treatment
Precise diagnosis and staging, including of possible cirrhosis, are important to guiding treatment. Mayo Clinic researchers invented magnetic resonance elastography, a noninvasive test that maps hardening of the liver. This state-of-the-art imaging helps Mayo specialists find liver disease early, giving people the opportunity to start treatment sooner and helping to improve outcomes.
Mayo Clinic also has a Hereditary Hemochromatosis Clinic located on Mayo Clinic's campus in Florida. It provides state-of-the-art diagnostics, treatments and education to patients who have hereditary hemochromatosis or who are at risk of developing it. This includes tests to identify the specific gene mutation that's responsible for your hemochromatosis. Knowing the exact mutation or mutations responsible is helpful in treating the condition and screening family members who also may be affected.
