Dr. Mateo Porres Aguilar is an Instructor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic. He is a board-certified academic internist/hospitalist, with formal training by completing a 1-year fellowship in Adult Clinical Thrombosis and Anticoagulation care with a focus in venous thromboembolism (VTE) and related venous disorders. He has undergone extensive medical training prior to joining the Mayo Clinic Vascular Medicine Division. He did his MD medical school at Universidad La Salle in Mexico City, Mexico. He performed his internship and medical residency in Internal Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC)/Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso, Texas.  After his postgraduate training, he was an assistant professor of medicine at TTUHSC/Paul L. Foster School of Medicine in El Paso, Texas for 11 years. Afterwards, he did an Advanced Focused Competency (AFC) formal postgraduate training/fellowship in Clinical Thrombosis Medicine and Anticoagulation Care at McGill University at Jewish General Hospital in Montreal, Quebec; Canada.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP). He is a Fellow of the Society for Vascular Medicine (FSVM). He is an Associated Member of the International Society for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (ISTH). He is board certified in the USA by the National Board of Anticoagulation Care Providers.

He is an active member of the Mexican Society of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (SOMETH), active member of the Society for Vascular Medicine (SVM) and he is the VTE chapter representative for Mexico for the Latin-American Cooperative Group of Thrombosis and Hemostasis (Grupo CLAHT).

His areas of clinical and research interest are in the acute and post-acute care of venous thromboembolism (VTE), treatment and prevention of VTE, perioperative and periprocedural management of anticoagulants, acute PE, post PE syndrome, Pulmonary Embolism Response Teams (PERTs) and chronic thromboembolic pulmonary vascular disorders, including CTEPD and CTEPH, the development of novel anticoagulant therapies.
