His work is rooted in helping individuals navigate complex surgical challenges, often after prior treatments have not brought lasting relief. Known for his thoughtful, collaborative style, Dr. Laplante combines advanced minimally invasive surgical techniques with careful attention to each person’s overall health and long-term recovery.

Areas of Expertise

Dr. Laplante carefully tailors each surgical plan to the person and condition at hand. His clinical focus includes:

  • Metabolic and bariatric surgery: Minimally invasive and complex bariatric procedures designed to support long-term metabolic health and meaningful lasting outcomes.
  • Gastrointestinal surgery: Minimally invasive and advanced surgical care for complex gastrointestinal conditions, with a focus on thoughtful decision-making, and care plans tailored to each individual's needs and long-term well being.
  • Abdominal wall reconstruction: Repair of complex abdominal wall defects, including challenging hernias, using reconstructive techniques that restore strength, function, and quality of life.
  • Minimally invasive surgery: Laparoscopic and robotic minimally invasive techniques used across bariatric, gastrointestinal, and abdominal wall procedures to support faster recovery and reduce hospital stays.

Research and Academic Focus

Dr. Laplante’s academic work reflects a deep curiosity about how surgery can continuously improve. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Toronto, followed by an advanced two-year fellowship in minimally invasive surgery focused on complex bariatric, gastrointestinal, and abdominal wall reconstructive surgery. He later joined the University of Toronto’s Department of Surgery and the University Health Network (UHN) as an Associate Surgeon.

Dr. Laplante holds a master’s degree in system leadership and innovation from the University of Toronto. This training shapes his research focus on surgical artificial intelligence and computer vision, with an emphasis on quality improvement, clinical decision support, and surgical education. Across clinical care, research, and collaboration, Dr. Laplante is committed to advancing surgery in ways that are evidence-driven, compassionate, and responsive to the evolving needs of the people he serves.
