Biographical summary
Navin Gupta, M.D., is an American physician-scientist and faculty member in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Gupta specializes in the treatment of genetic kidney diseases, including polycystic kidney disease (PKD), as well as acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, hypertension, kidney stones, and electrolyte abnormalities. He is certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology by the American Board of Internal Medicine.
Prior to joining the faculty at Mayo Clinic in 2023, he spent 8 years at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and affiliated major teaching hospitals, ultimately serving as an Associate Physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and a faculty member at HMS. He is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School, of the internal medicine and chief medical residency at Saint Elizabeth's Medical Center (Boston, MA), and the Harvard combined Nephrology fellowship.
Dr. Gupta leads a basic science research program using kidney tissue derived from human stem cells, termed kidney organoids. Kidney organoids permit experimentation in human kidney tissue-in-a-dish, enabling translational research in disease modeling, drug discovery, and regenerative medicine. Federally, his work has been supported by an Innovative Science Accelerator award (NIH/NIDDK), a Polycystic Kidney Disease Research Resource Consortium pilot and feasibility award (NIH/NIDDK), a Spore award (NIH/NCI), and a prior Ruth L. Kirchstein T32 award (NIH/NIDDK). He has received an Amyloidosis Foundation Research award and Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) inter-fellowship award as additional extramural support. At the Mayo Clinic, he has received the Kathryn H. and Roger Penske Career Development Award, a Mayo Clinic Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCaTS) grant, and an Amyloid Interest Group award.
