Dmitry Esterov, D.O., M.S.

Dmitry Esterov, M.D., is an Assistant Professor of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, with specialty interest in Neurological Rehabilitation including the rehabilitation of individuals with Traumatic and Acquired Brain Injury, through the spectrum of disease severity.

Dr. Esterov is an integral participant in the PM&R Resident and Fellowship program. He provides one-on-one training to learners for areas in Brain Injury, Neuromuscular Disorders, Spasticity Management, and Inpatient Rehabilitation. He is part of the Brain Rehab Core Curriculum Committee, creating and revising the curriculum and lectures for incoming residents and fellows.

Dr. Esterov's areas of research interest are in the rehabilitation of traumatic brain injury (TBI) through the spectrum of disease severity, as well as in the rehabilitation of acquired brain injury. He has an interest in community based, pragmatic clinical trials that are designed for implementation to allow for improved access to brain rehabilitation services, including for those in rural and underserved areas. He has interest in in utilizing the Rochester Epidemiology Project, as well as other large data sets, to understand the risk, protective, and resiliency factors that are associated with long term outcomes after TBI, including psychological health, cognition, and epilepsy after TBI. He is interested in understanding early life factors that predict long term recovery after TBI.

Dr. Esterov has a few current grants, studying:

  • Predicting Outcome after Moderate-Severe Traumatic Brain Injury using a CT head Deep Learning Model
  • Risk for Depression after Childhood Traumatic Brain Injury: A Population-Based, Birth Cohort Medical Record Review Analysis
  • The Impact of Adverse Childhood Events on Long Term Psychiatric Outcomes after Childhood Traumatic Brain Injury
  • Post-traumatic epilepsy: A longitudinal, population-based medical record review analysis of incidence, risk, and prediction
