Suhny Abbara, M.D.

Suhny Abbara, M.D., FACR, MSCCT, FNASCI, is a Senior Associate Consultant and Chair of the Cardiothoracic Imaging Division at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida. He earned his MD from Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf, Germany, where he also completed a vascular surgery internship. Dr. Abbara completed his Radiology Residency, including a Chief Resident year, at Georgetown University and a Fellowship in Cardiac Imaging at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he established and directed the Cardiovascular Imaging Section and Cardiac Imaging Fellowship from 2003 to 2011.

Until 2024, Dr. Abbara served as a tenured Professor, Division Chief, and Fellowship Director at UT Southwestern, where he established a 3D imaging laboratory and created and chaired the CT Operations Committee.

A dedicated educator and researcher, Dr. Abbara has authored seven major textbooks and published over 350 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. He has held leadership roles in numerous national society committees, including patient care guidelines committees. He has served as President of the Society for Cardiovascular Computed Tomography and as President of the Certification Board for Cardiovascular Computed Tomography. Currently, he serves as Editor-in-Chief of RSNA's Scientific Journal Radiology: Cardiothoracic Imaging.
