Francis A. Farraye, M.D., M.S.

Francis A. Farraye, M.D., M.S., is a board-certified gastroenterologist, Professor of Medicine, and Director of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) Center at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. With nearly four decades of experience caring for people with complex Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and related IBD conditions, Dr. Farraye provides expert, compassionate care to individuals seeking advanced, long-term management of their digestive health. Before joining Mayo Clinic in 2019, he served as Clinical Director of the Section of Gastroenterology and Director of the IBD Center at Boston Medical Center, and was Professor of Medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine. He completed his medical degree at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York and earned a master's degree in epidemiology from the Harvard School of Public Health.

Dr. Farraye's clinical practice and research are dedicated to improving the lives of patients with inflammatory bowel disease through precision treatment strategies, preventive health measures, and evidence-based care. He is currently investigating the effects of GLP-1 medications on the natural history of IBD, the optimization of existing treatments, and vaccine efficacy and safety in immunosuppressed patients. As lead author of the American College of Gastroenterology's Preventive Health Guideline for patients with IBD, Dr. Farraye has helped shape national and international clinical standards that guide prevention and long-term wellness for those living with IBD. He is a respected authority on comparative effectiveness of therapies, vaccination strategies, investigational treatments, and outcomes following J-pouch surgery.

A prolific researcher and educator, Dr. Farraye has authored or co-authored more than 600 scientific publications, book chapters, reviews, and abstracts, and co-edited several medical textbooks, including Curbside Consultation in Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Gastrointestinal Emergencies. He also coauthored patient-centered guides such as Questions and Answers about Crohn's Disease, Questions and Answers about Ulcerative Colitis, and Mayo Clinic on Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. His work reflects a lifelong dedication to both advancing knowledge and empowering patients with clear, accessible information about their conditions and treatment options.

Dr. Farraye is a Fellow of the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, American Gastroenterological Association, Crohns and Colitis Foundation and a Master of the American College of Gastroenterology. He currently serves as Vice Chair of the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Committee for the World Gastroenterology Organization and frequently lectures nationally and internationally on the diagnosis, management, and evolving science of IBD. Recognized for his leadership and contributions to the field, he received the William Carey Award from the American College of Gastroenterology in 2009, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the New England Crohn's and Colitis Foundation in 2020 and honored as the 2026 Health Care Professional Honoree by the Central and Northeastern Florida Crohn's and Colitis Foundation.

They love visiting their 2 daughters and their young grandson, Reece, as often as possible, and Dr. Farraye enjoys fishing in his free time.
