Research

Mayo Clinic participated in the National Emphysema Treatment Trial, which studied lung volume reduction surgery to see who would most likely benefit from the surgery. The study also looked at what qualities determined whether someone had a successful or unsuccessful surgery.

Research leader

Mayo Clinic has been a pioneering center in translating lung volume reduction surgery from a research tool to part of the everyday care of people with emphysema.

Mayo Clinic has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health to pinpoint and test lung rehabilitation options. Then this knowledge is used to give the best care to people with lung diseases.

This focus on research makes more treatment choices available to Mayo Clinic patients. Various clinical trials and other studies may be available to you at Mayo Clinic.
