What kind of helmet is needed after craniectomy, and how long is it worn?

A craniectomy is surgery to remove a piece of the skull. After a craniectomy, a helmet may help protect the area where the skull was removed, especially when you are moving around.

Helmets to protect the head are available in different designs. These are special helmets designed to protect the brain after craniectomy. Some are ready-made. They stay in place with straps. If this type doesn't fit safely, a helmet can be custom-made to fit the shape of your head to avoid putting pressure on the area where the skull was removed.

How long you need to wear a helmet depends on factors such as your activity level and your healing. You may need to wear the helmet for between six weeks and three months. Your care team will tell you when to wear it and how long you need to wear it.
