Biographical summary
Erick M. Marigi, M.D., is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida specializing in shoulder arthroscopy, robotic shoulder replacement, and sports medicine. He cares for patients of all ages and activity levels, from recreational athletes to elite competitors, with the goal of reducing pain, restoring function, and helping patients return confidently to their desired activities.
Raised in Minnesota, Dr. Marigi earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He then completed an advanced fellowship in shoulder surgery and sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, where he also provided medical care for the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Red Bulls.
Clinically, Dr. Marigi takes a personalized, evidence-based approach to care. He works with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan that may include nonsurgical care, minimally invasive procedures, or surgery when appropriate. His shoulder practice encompasses the full spectrum of conditions, including rotator cuff tears, labral tears, and shoulder arthritis. In the knee, he focuses on knee preservation and the treatment of athletic knee injuries such as anterior cruciate ligament tears and meniscus tears.
A recognized leader in shoulder arthroplasty innovation, Dr. Marigi has played a key role in the evaluation and research of emerging robotic technologies. He became the first surgeon in Florida to perform a robotic anatomic total shoulder replacement and the first surgeon in the world to perform robotic-assisted shoulder replacements across multiple platforms. Today, he routinely provides robotic-assisted shoulder replacement to patients in Jacksonville, throughout Florida and the Southeast, and across the United States.
Key Focus Areas:
- Rotator cuff repair with or without biologic augmentation
- Shoulder labral repair and treatment of shoulder instability
- Robotic-assisted Shoulder Replacement
- Anatomic and Reverse total shoulder replacement
- Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction
- Joint Preservation (Meniscus repair / Cartilage restoration)
Beyond patient care, Dr. Marigi is an internationally recognized clinician-scientist who has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed manuscripts, abstracts, and book chapters and delivered more than 150 presentations at national and international meetings. He serves as a principal investigator and research collaborator within Mayo Clinic's Orthopedic Surgery Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, where his work focuses on diagnostic assistance, surgical guidance, and predictive analytics.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Marigi is dedicated to advancing orthopedic surgery and sports medicine through collaborative research, education, and professional leadership. His academic work centers on the development of innovative surgical techniques to enhance precision, safety, and patient outcomes. He actively teaches medical students, residents, and visiting fellows. Similarly, he contributes to the broader orthopedic community through service in specialty organizations at the local, national, and international levels.
