Research

Peripheral nerve tumor researchers

Mayo Clinic researchers discuss peripheral nerve tumors.

Mayo Clinic researchers have a long tradition of studying new ways of diagnosing and treating peripheral nerve disorders, including tumors.

Researchers from many areas work to improve diagnosis and treatment for people with peripheral nerve disorders and peripheral nerve tumors. Those areas include neurology, neurosurgery, medical genetics, laboratory medicine and pathology, along with other areas.

These researchers have:

  • Identified a new syndrome.
  • Identified specific gene changes implicated in a type of peripheral nerve tumor.
  • Identified the mechanism for and treatment of intraneural ganglion cysts.
  • Proved that cancers can spread along peripheral nerves.
  • Proved that noninvasive imaging techniques such as PET-MRI can distinguish a benign tumor from a cancerous one. This means that malignancies can be identified without the need for surgery.
