Mathew Thomas, M.B.B.S., M.D., is a surgeon in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, and Associate Professor of Surgery, Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. He is also the Director of Thoracic Surgery and Chair of Robotic Surgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida. He joined Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida in 2012 immediately after completing his cardiothoracic residency in Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a recipient of the O.T. Clagett Award in 2012 for Outstanding Resident in Thoracic Surgery in 2012.

Dr. Thomas is primarily interested in advancing minimally invasive surgeries of the chest, trachea and esophagus through innovative approaches including robotic surgery, video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) and single incision thoracic surgery. He is also an expert in the management of complex chest wall diseases, both malignant and benign conditions such as pectus excavatum. He has directed the Chest Wall Resection and Reconstruction course at the Society of Thoracic Surgeons University — a very popular course among thoracic surgeons — for many years.

Dr. Thomas is an experienced lung transplant surgeon, having performed the first lobar (partial) lung transplant and the first lung transplant for COVID-19 related lung failure in Mayo Clinic. He has many research publications and has presented on his experience in numerous national and international conferences. He is also an avid educator and finds great joy in mentoring.
