David D. Thiel, M.D.

I'm Dr. David Thiel with the Department of Urology here at Mayo Clinic in Florida. I'm a Professor of Urology and I specialize in minimally invasive surgery for kidney cancer and prostate cancer. I think the main reason most people choose to go into medicine, and namely to be a physician, is to help others. The reason I picked urology is it's a field where most of our cancers and ailments are curable and they are curable with surgical interventions. The thing I love most about working at Mayo Clinic is I do believe we are the most efficient, cost-effective health delivery system in the world. We have an abundance of resources to help our physicians, our providers, our nurses, and mostly our patients. Our collaboration in a multi-specialty fashion with these other experts makes us more efficient, it makes us safer on it, and it helps us do what we do. The Mayo Clinic model of care relies on communication with the patient and relies on communication with each other. We rely on collaboration. At Mayo Clinic, the patient truly does come first. All of our technology, everything we do, all of our resources, all of our communications are geared towards getting that singular patient through the health care system with a cure or at least some type of improvement in their situation in the most efficient way possible.
