Biographical summary
Patricia (Trish) J. Simner, PhD, D(ABBM) F(AAM), is a clinical microbiologist and Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Simner serves as a Senior Associate Consultant and Director of the Clinical Microbiology and Molecular Laboratory within the Division of Clinical Microbiology, where her clinical focus centers on diagnostic microbiology, antimicrobial resistance, and molecular infectious disease testing.
She is internationally recognized for her expertise in the mechanisms and molecular epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance, particularly among gram-negative bacteria harboring β-lactamases. Dr. Simner’s work also advances rapid diagnostic technologies and next-generation sequencing applications to improve pathogen detection and patient care.
In addition to her clinical and research roles, she contributes to the field through national and international leadership. Dr. Simner serves as an Editor for the Journal of Clinical Microbiology and is an elected member of the American Academy of Microbiology.
