Shounak Majumder, M.D., is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Consultant in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a board-certified gastroenterologist with fellowship training in medical pancreatology and specializes in the diagnosis and management of complex pancreatic diseases. Dr. Majumder directs Mayo Clinic's High-Risk Pancreas Clinic and leads the Pancreatic Cancer Early Detection Research Program. His clinical expertise includes management of pancreatic cysts, pancreatic cancer, acute and chronic and autoimmune pancreatitis. A particular focus of his practice is pancreatic cancer risk assessment, surveillance, and early detection in high-risk individuals while helping patients with pancreatic conditions navigate complex decisions regarding surveillance, additional diagnostic testing, and the potential need for endoscopic and surgical intervention. He also serves as Associate Chair of Innovation for the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and Program Director of the Pancreatology Fellowship Program.

Areas of expertise

Pancreatic cysts: Risk assessment, surveillance, advanced diagnostic evaluation, and multidisciplinary decisions regarding surgery versus continued monitoring.

Pancreatitis: Evaluation and management of acute, recurrent acute, chronic, and autoimmune pancreatitis.

Pancreatic cancer risk and early detection: Care of patients at increased risk for pancreatic cancer, with an emphasis on identifying cancer and advanced precancer at an earlier, potentially treatable stage.

Precision diagnostics and innovation: Integration of imaging, endoscopy, molecular biomarkers, and artificial intelligence to improve pancreatic disease diagnosis and individualized risk prediction.

Common conditions treated

Pancreatic cysts

Pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor

Chronic and recurrent acute pancreatitis

Autoimmune pancreatitis

Increased risk for pancreatic cancer

Clinical focus areas

Pancreatic cyst evaluation and surveillance; pancreatic cancer risk assessment and screening for high-risk individuals with familial and genetic risk; and multidisciplinary care of patients with complex pancreatic conditions including acute and chronic autoimmune pancreatitis and pancreatic neoplasms.

Research expertise

As an NIH-funded physician-scientist, Dr. Majumder's research aims to develop molecular biomarkers and digital tools for earlier detection of pancreatic cancer. His research has contributed to the discovery and validation of methylated DNA biomarkers in pancreatic juice, cyst fluid, and blood, as well as artificial intelligence-based approaches to pancreatic cancer screening and risk prediction. Dr. Majumder has published extensively in the field of pancreatology, including work in leading healthcare journals and medical textbooks. He also serves as Vice Chair of the Pancreatic Disorders Section of the American Gastroenterological Association and is nationally and internationally recognized for his expertise in pancreatic disease.

Care philosophy
