Bryan C. Husta, M.D., F.C.C.P., is an Interventional Pulmonologist and Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Sleep Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He specializes in the diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of lung cancer, pulmonary nodules, airway tumors, pleural effusions, pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP), and complex tracheal and bronchial disorders. His clinical interests also include carcinoid tumors, diffuse idiopathic pulmonary neuroendocrine cell hyperplasia (DIPNECH), airway obstruction, and benign and malignant airway disease.
Dr. Husta performs a wide range of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, including robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS), lung biopsy, transbronchial cryobiopsy, laser bronchoscopy, airway dilation, airway stent placement, and bronchoscopic tumor ablation. By combining advanced imaging and bronchoscopic technology with a patient-centered approach, he helps patients receive accurate diagnoses and effective treatment while minimizing the need for more invasive surgery whenever possible.
A recognized leader in interventional pulmonology, Dr. Husta has helped expand the use of advanced bronchoscopic technologies, including robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, cone-beam CT imaging, and bronchoscopic tumor ablation. His research focuses on improving the early detection of lung cancer, advancing image-guided bronchoscopy, and developing innovative minimally invasive therapies for pulmonary tumors and complex airway diseases. He has served as a principal investigator and author on multicenter clinical trials evaluating new technologies that continue to advance the field of interventional pulmonology.
Dr. Husta completed his fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine, where the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or care for the whole person, became a cornerstone of his approach to patient care. He then completed advanced fellowship training in Interventional Pulmonary Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, where he received specialized training in advanced diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopic procedures.
Before joining Mayo Clinic, Dr. Husta served on the faculty at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where he was Medical Director of Endobronchial Therapies and helped develop advanced bronchoscopy, bronchoscopic cryobiopsy, and medical thoracoscopy programs for patients with thoracic cancers and complex airway disease. At Mayo Clinic, he serves as Vice Chair of Education for the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Sleep Medicine and Program Director of the Interventional Pulmonology Fellowship, where he mentors fellows, residents, and medical students and helps train the next generation of interventional pulmonologists.
Drawn to interventional pulmonology by the opportunity to combine leading-edge technology with compassionate care, Dr. Husta believes every patient deserves individualized treatment. Guided by the principle of cura personalis, he focuses not only on treating disease but also on understanding each patient's goals, values, and quality of life.
"Interventional pulmonology allows us to offer patients innovative, minimally invasive therapies that can diagnose disease earlier, improve outcomes, and in many cases provide treatment without major surgery," says Dr. Husta. "Just as important, I believe in taking the time to understand each patient's unique circumstances so we can make decisions together that best fit their lives."
Dr. Husta takes a multidisciplinary approach to care, collaborating closely with thoracic surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pulmonologists, and radiologists to develop personalized treatment plans. His goal is to provide innovative, minimally invasive care while advancing the field through research, education, and collaboration.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Husta enjoys advanced scuba diving, particularly exploring historic shipwrecks, and is an instrument-rated pilot who enjoys flying high-performance aircraft. Most of all, he values spending time with his wife, daughter, and their two corgis.
