Biographical summary
John Gubatan, M.D., is a physician scientist, board-certified gastroenterologist, and Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Gubatan has expertise in the evaluation and management of patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) including ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, microscopic colitis, and cancer immunotherapy-related colitis (immune checkpoint inhibitor colitis, CAR T cell enterocolitis). Prior to joining the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center at the Mayo Clinic, he was an Instructor of Medicine at Stanford University.
Dr. Gubatan earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School. He completed his gastroenterology fellowship at Stanford University where he served as Chief Fellow and was an American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) editorial fellow for Gastroenterology.
His research focuses on translational studies using multi-omics to understand mechanisms of therapy failure and host immune and gut microbiome interactions in the pathogenesis of IBD. Dr. Gubatan’s published work has been featured in leading journals including Gastroenterology, Gut, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, American Journal of Gastroenterology, Journal of Crohns & Colitis, Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, etc. His research and career development have been supported by a Chan Zuckerberg Biohub Physician Scientist Scholar Award, NIH NIDDK LRP Award, Doris Duke Foundation Physician Scientist Fellowship Award, Stanford MCHRI Pediatric IBD and Celiac Disease Research Award, and by the American Gastroenterological Association FORWARD Scholars program.
