Pooja Budhiraja, M.B.B.S.

Pooja Budhiraja, M.B.B.S., M.D., F.A.S.N., is a transplant nephrologist and currently serves as Medical Director of the Living Donor Kidney Transplant Program in Phoenix, Arizona. She specializes in kidney transplantation, pancreas transplantation, living donor transplantation and the care of patients with kidney disease and kidney failure.

Dr. Budhiraja is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and serves as Associate Program Director of the Renal Transplant Fellowship within Mayo Clinic’s Division of Nephrology and Hypertension. She is actively involved in educating and mentoring transplant fellows, residents and medical students while helping train the next generation of transplant nephrologists.

Her research focuses on center-specific transplant outcomes, donor acute kidney injury, living kidney donation, metabolic disease, simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation and post-transplant complications. She has a particular interest in identifying strategies that improve recipient and donor outcomes across the transplant continuum.

Dr. Budhiraja received her medical degree from Maulana Azad Medical College and has more than two decades of clinical experience. She completed residency and nephrology fellowship training at the University of Arizona College of Medicine and is board-certified in nephrology.

In addition to her clinical and academic responsibilities, Dr. Budhiraja contributes to national and institutional transplant initiatives through leadership and committee service, including living donor transplantation, transplant quality improvement and transplant clinical practice. She is committed to advancing patient-centered transplant care through clinical excellence, education and research.
