Mayo Clinic's approach
The doctors at Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center provide excellent care for people who are considering proton therapy for prostate cancer.
Your Mayo Clinic care team
At Mayo Clinic, experienced radiation oncologists design proton therapy treatment plans for people with prostate cancer. Your radiation oncologist works with a team of experts such as physicists, dosimetrists, radiation therapists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and nurses to ensure the safe delivery of proton therapy.
Your radiation oncologist also works with doctors from other specialties to ensure all your needs are met. Your care team might also include urologists, oncologists, nuclear medicine specialists, pathologists and radiologists.
Precise treatments
Mayo Clinic's Proton Beam Therapy Program uses pencil beam scanning, which is among the most precise forms of proton delivery. The pencil beam conforms more closely to the tumor, so specialists can "paint" small spots of protons back and forth through a tumor. The accelerated protons fill the depth and contour of the tumor. The precision of pencil beam scanning makes it especially beneficial in treating cancers near sensitive organs. For people with prostate cancer, this precision helps limit radiation to the rectum and bladder.
Experience you can trust
Mayo Clinic doctors are respected for their experience in using proton therapy and other types of external beam radiation to treat prostate cancer. Your proton therapy team draws on this experience to customize your treatment plan and deliver the most precise treatment. Proton therapy is just one type of radiation therapy treatment available for people with prostate cancer.
Each year, Mayo Clinic radiation oncologists care for more than 10,000 people undergoing radiation therapy. More than 23,000 people with prostate cancer receive care at Mayo Clinic each year.
