Edward R. Cachay, M.D.

Edward Cachay, M.D., is a board-certified infectious disease physician with expertise in caring for individuals with HIV and other immunosuppressive conditions. He is a Professor of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

Dr. Cachay earned his medical degree from the National University Federico Villarreal in Peru and completed residency training in internal medicine and fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of California, San Diego (UC San Diego). He also holds a master’s degree in advanced sciences and clinical research from UC San Diego.

He is certified by the American Malignancy Consortium to perform high-resolution anoscopy for the screening and treatment of anal cancer precursor lesions.

Dr. Cachay’s clinical focus includes managing complex infectious diseases, particularly opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients, including those living with HIV or post-transplant. He is widely recognized for his work in HIV, hepatitis C, and HPV-related anal cancer, leading multidisciplinary programs to improve patient outcomes.

His research interests include the clinical and translational science of anal cancer prevention in immunosuppressed populations, especially solid organ transplant recipients.
