Descripción general
La hemorragia subaracnoidea es el sangrado en el espacio entre el cerebro y la membrana que lo rodea (espacio subaracnoideo). El principal síntoma es un dolor de cabeza intenso y repentino. A veces, el dolor de cabeza se relaciona con náuseas, vómitos y una breve pérdida del conocimiento.
El sangrado generalmente se produce por la rotura de una protuberancia anormal en uno de los vasos sanguíneos del cerebro (aneurisma). A veces, un enredo anormal de vasos sanguíneos en el cerebro (malformación arteriovenosa), un traumatismo u otros problemas de los vasos sanguíneos o de salud pueden provocar el sangrado.
Si no se trata, una hemorragia subaracnoidea puede provocar lesiones del cerebro permanentes o la muerte.
