Purna Chandra Kashyap, MBBS, is Professor of Medicine and Physiology and the Bernard and Edith Waterman Director of the Microbiome Program at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He provides specialized care for patients with complex gastrointestinal disorders, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to develop personalized treatment plans. His clinical expertise focuses on disorders of gut–brain interaction, gastrointestinal motility disorders, and conditions in which alterations of the gut microbiome contribute to symptoms and disease.

Research and professional highlights​

Dr. Kashyap is an internationally recognized physician-scientist whose research focuses on understanding how gut microorganisms and the molecules they produce influence gastrointestinal physiology, the gut–brain axis, and human disease. His laboratory integrates clinical studies with advanced multi-omics technologies and mechanistic models to uncover new therapeutic targets and develop precision microbiome-based treatments for gastrointestinal disorders.​

He serves as Director of the Mayo Clinic Microbiome Program, where he leads multidisciplinary efforts to translate discoveries in microbiome science into improved patient care. Dr. Kashyap has received numerous accolades for his research and mentorship and serves on leadership and advisory committees that advance the fields of gastroenterology and microbiome science. In addition to his clinical practice and research, he is dedicated to mentoring the next generation of physicians and scientists and advancing precision medicine in gastroenterology.
