A heart attack occurs when an artery that sends blood and oxygen to the heart is blocked. A buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances can make arteries narrow, blocking blood flow. This buildup is called plaque. If plaque bursts, a blood clot may form. The clot can lead to a heart attack. During a heart attack, a lack of blood flow causes the tissue in the heart muscle to die.
