Jeffrey L. Winters, M.D., is an anatomic/clinical pathologist with subspecialty training in transfusion medicine. He has a special interest in therapeutic apheresis. His clinical focuses are:

  • Use of apheresis to treat disease, including the use of plasma exchange to treat hematologic diseases (for example, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura), neurological diseases (for example, acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis), nephrologic diseases (for example, anti-basement membrane antibody diseases and ANCA vasculitis) and transplant-related disorders (for example, humoral rejection, desensitization)
  • Optimization of the collection of hematopoietic stem cells for stem cell transplantation
  • Optimization of the collection of mononuclear cells for regenerative medicine and immunotherapy treatments
  • Use of photopheresis to treat cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, graft-versus-host disease, cardiac rejection and lung rejection

In addition to his clinical interest, Dr. Winters is also involved in research and education. He is the program director for the Mayo Clinic Transfusion Medicine Fellowship and the associate program director in charge of clinical pathology curriculum for the Mayo Clinic Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Residency. He has authored numerous articles mostly in apheresis and immunohematology.
