Anja C. Roden, M.D.

Dr. Anja C. Roden is a pathologist who is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology with special interest and expertise in thoracic and surgical pathology. 

Her clinical focus includes:

• Diagnosis and staging of mediastinal tumors, such as thymomas, thymic carcinomas, neuroendocrine neoplasms, germ cell tumors, cysts, metastases, among others
• Diagnosis and staging of lung tumors, such as non-small cell carcinomas, small cell carcinomas, other neuroendocrine neoplasms, rare benign and malignant tumors of the lung
• Diagnosis of interstitial lung diseases
• Diagnosis of mesothelial and chest wall neoplasms such as malignant mesothelioma, reactive mesothelial proliferation, metastasis

Dr. Roden also has expertise in biomarkers including diagnostic, predictive and theranostic biomarkers. She serves as Medical Director of the Immunostains Laboratory and is involved in the development of immunostains and in situ hybridization stains.

Dr. Roden focuses her research on mediastinal neoplasms, malignant mesotheliomas, biomarkers, interstitial lung diseases, and pulmonary transplant pathology. She published her work in over 190 peer-reviewed manuscript, wrote more than 40 book chapters on mediastinal, pulmonary and mesothelial neoplasms and non-neoplastic lung disease, was involved in the 2021 WHO of thoracic tumors, and was the co-editor of the books "Mediastinal Lesions. Diagnostic Pearls for Interpretation of Small Biopsies and Cytology" and "Pulmonary Pathology. An Atlas and Text". She also has been an invited speaker on these topics in national and international meetings and congresses. Following her interests she chairs the thymic carcinoma and mediastinal working groups in the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group, is active in the International Society of the Study of Lung Cancer and Pulmonary Pathology Society, and is a member of an International Mesothelioma Panel and an International Virtual Thymoma Panel. For her work she was the recipient of the President's Pulmonary Pathology Society Innovation Award in 2017 and the Best Author Award 2020 of Pathology Outlines for a contribution on "Pleura-Diffuse malignant mesothelioma".
