Blanca C. Lizaola-Mayo, M.D.

Blanca C. Lizaola-Mayo, M.D., is a gastroenterologist and transplant hepatologist at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. She specializes in liver transplantation and the care of patients with complex acute and chronic liver disease, with particular interests in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) formerly known as Fatty Liver disease, post-transplant outcomes, frailty and sarcopenia in liver disease, and health disparities in liver care.

Dr. Lizaola-Mayo cares for patients with cirrhosis, MASLD, alcoholic hepatitis, autoimmune hepatitis, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatic encephalopathy and hepatocellular carcinoma. She also evaluates and manages patients before and after liver transplantation as part of Mayo Clinic's multidisciplinary transplant practice.

Dr. Lizaola-Mayo is a member of Mayo Clinic's Liver Transplant Program and Hepatobiliary Clinic, where she collaborates with specialists across hepatology, transplantation, gastroenterology, nutrition and other disciplines to develop individualized treatment plans for patients with advanced liver disease. Dr. Lizaola-Mayo is an Associate Professor of Medicine and serves as Medical Director of the Liver Transplant Center in Arizona.

Dr. Lizaola-Mayo is board-certified in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. She is also board-certified in Obesity by the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She completed fellowship training in gastroenterology and transplant hepatology through Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education in Arizona. She performs procedures including colonoscopy, upper endoscopy, balloon-assisted enteroscopy and variceal band ligation.

In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Lizaola-Mayo participates in research and professional activities focused on MASLD, liver transplantation, post-transplant outcomes, frailty and sarcopenia, and reducing health disparities. Fluent in English and Spanish, she is committed to patient-centered care, education and shared decision-making to help patients navigate complex liver conditions and transplant-related care.
