Biographical summary
Dr. Xiaoyan Liao earned her medical degree from Beijing Medical University and a PhD in Developmental Toxicology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She completed residency training in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) Health System in 2017, followed by fellowship training in Gastrointestinal and Liver Pathology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. Prior to joining Mayo Clinic, Dr. Liao was an Associate Professor and Director of the Liver Pathology Service at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC),
where she continues to hold an appointment as Adjunct Faculty. Her clinical and research interests center on gastrointestinal and liver pathology, with particular expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), appendiceal pathology, medical liver diseases, and hepatic neoplasms. Dr. Liao is a dedicated researcher and educator. She is an active member of both USCAP and the Gastrointestinal Pathology Society (GIPS). Additionally, she serves as an Editor for PathologyOutlines.com, overseeing the Anus chapter.
