Gregory Frey, M.D., M.P.H., is chair of the Division of Interventional Radiology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, and an associate professor of radiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Board certified in diagnostic radiology, vascular and interventional radiology, and interventional radiology/diagnostic radiology, Dr. Frey provides care for people in Jacksonville and surrounding areas using advanced, minimally invasive image-guided and endovascular therapies.

Dr. Frey's interventional oncology practice focuses on liver, renal, and prostate cancers, offering therapies that reduce procedure risk while maintaining precision. He previously served as program director for the integrated and independent interventional radiology residency programs, helping train the next generation of interventional radiologists.

Areas of expertise

Dr. Frey provides minimally invasive, image-guided therapies for cancer and vascular conditions. His areas of expertise include:

  • Primary liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma): Liver-directed interventional treatments including radioembolization and image-guided tumor ablation
  • Renal and prostate cancer: MR-guided and image-guided therapies to minimize invasiveness while maintaining accuracy
  • Venous disease: Treatment of chronic venous disorders and venous insufficiency using catheter-based and endovascular approaches
  • Portal hypertension: Image-guided management of complex portal hypertension and its complications
  • Interventional oncology: Advanced image-guided and minimally invasive cancer care for patients seeking targeted treatment options

Research and expertise

Dr. Frey's research explores MR-guided interventional therapy, including MRI-guided prostate cancer treatment, liver-directed cancer therapy, image-guided tumor ablation, and venous interventions. His academic work reflects a dedication to advancing precision-based oncology and improving minimally invasive procedural outcomes.

As chair of the Division of Interventional Radiology at Mayo Clinic in Florida, Dr. Frey leads collaborative research and clinical innovation aimed at enhancing patient-centered care.

Personal note

Dr. Frey believes that patients deserve a clear understanding of their medical options so they can make informed decisions aligned with their goals.

"The path to choosing a treatment is not always straightforward. The risks and benefits of a therapy can vary from person to person and must be considered in the context of each patient's priorities. It is our duty to help patients understand these issues and identify therapies that ultimately fit their personal treatment goals."

Outside of his work, Dr. Frey enjoys cooking, traveling, fly fishing, and playing tennis.
