من الشائع عبر الزمن شرب الشاي أو ماء الليمون الدافئ الممزوج بالعسل من أجل تلطيف التهاب الحلق. وقد يكون العسل وحده أيضًا من مسكنات السعال الفعالة.

في إحدى الدراسات، أعطي أطفال الذين أعمارهم من سنة و5 سنوات ومصابين بعدوى في الجهاز التنفسي العلوي ما يصل ملعقتين صغيرتين (10 ملليلتر) من العسل وقت النوم. بدا أن العسل يقلل من السعال أثناء فترة الليل ويحسن النوم.

في الواقع، أوضحت الدراسة أن العسل فعال مثله مثل ديكسترومثورفان، وهو مكون شائع لمسكنات السعال، وذلك في الجرعات النموذجية المتاحة دون وصفة طبية. نظرًا لأن العسل منخفض التكلفة ومتوفر بشكل كبير، فقد يستحق التجربة.

مع ذلك، وبسبب خطورة الإصابة بالتسمم السجقي لدى الرضع، وهي حالة نادرة ولكن خطيرة من حالات التسمم الغذائي، فيجب الامتناع عن إعطاء العسل للأطفال الذين تقل أعمارهم عن سنة.
