هل صحيح أن العسل يهدئ السعال بشكل أفضل من دواء السعال؟

من الشائع شرب الشاي أو ماء الليمون الدافئ الممزوج بالعسل من أجل تلطيف التهاب الحلق. لكن قد يكون العسل وحده فعَّالاً في تقليل السعال مثل الأدوية المتاحة بدون وصفة طبية.

في العديد من الدراسات، أُعطي الأشخاص المصابون بعدوى في الجهاز التنفسي العلوي العسل لتقليل السعال. واتَّضح أن العسل يقلل السعال لديهم ويساعدهم على النوم بشكل أفضل. وأُجرِيَت هذه الدراسات على الأطفال أيضًا.

أوضحت هذه الدراسات أن العسل فعَّال مثل ديفينهيدرامِين، لكن هناك حاجة إلى إجراء دراسات عالية الجودة لتأكيد النتائج. ديفينهيدرامِين مكونٌ شائع في الأدوية المتاحة بدون وصفة طبية لتقليل السعال. ونظرًا إلى أن العسل آمن للأشخاص الذين تزيد أعمارهم على عام، فقد يستحق التجربة.

يمكن إعطاء الأطفال الذين تتراوح أعمارهم بين عام فأكبر 0.5 إلى ملعقة صغيرة (2.5 إلى 5 ملليلترات) من العسل لعلاج السعال. ويمكن إعطاؤه كما هو أو إضافته إلى سوائل أخرى، مثل العصير، لتخفيف تركيزه. وبسبب خطورة الإصابة بالتسمم السجقي لدى الرضع، وهي حالة نادرة ولكن خطيرة من حالات التسمم الغذائي، يجب الامتناع عن إعطاء العسل للأطفال الذين تقل أعمارهم عن سنة.

وتذكَّر الآتي: السعال ليس سيئًا بشكل عام. فهو يساعد على تطهير ممرات الهواء من المخاط إذا كنت مصابًا بعدوى أو حساسية على سبيل المثال. ومن ناحية أخرى، إذا كنت تتمتع أنت أو طفلك بصحة جيدة، فلا داعي عادةً لمحاولة إيقاف السعال العَرضي. وتابِع مع الطبيب أو اختصاصي رعاية صحية آخر طلبًا للمشورة في حال كانت لديك أي مخاوف.
