Biographical summary
Amra Sakusic, M.D., Ph.D., was born in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where she completed medical school and her residency in internal medicine at the University of Tuzla. As a Fulbright Scholar, she joined Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, where she conducted research for her PhD in Neuroscience. Following completion of her PhD, Dr. Sakusic completed a neurology residency at Mayo Clinic Florida and subsequently a Neurocritical Care Fellowship at Mayo Clinic Rochester.
Her research focuses on neurocritical care, including the timing of anticoagulation resumption in patients with intracranial hemorrhage and mechanical heart valves, ICU delirium, Lance-Adams syndrome, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES), neurological complications in patients on ECMO and after organ transplantation, and long-term cognitive outcomes after critical illness. She has authored multiple peer-reviewed publications and has received several research awards, including the International Medis Award and the Star Research Medal Award in Critical Care.
Her current and future research interests include exploring the efficacy of mesenchymal stem cell therapy in patients with intracranial hemorrhage and developing point-of-care devices to measure anticoagulation parameters in patients during acute ischemic stroke.
