Sarah Lund, M.D., M.H.P.E., is an endocrine surgeon passionate about providing surgical care for people with endocrine disorders. She provides advanced surgical management of conditions affecting the thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. Dr. Lund is committed to delivering patient-centered care informed by the latest evidence, with thoughtful expertise and clinical precision refined by her training at leading institutions.
Areas of expertise
Dr. Lund's approach to endocrine surgery is individualized based on the needs of her patients. She provides comprehensive surgical care for endocrine disorders, such as:
- Thyroid disease: Surgical management of benign and malignant thyroid disease, including thyroid nodules, multinodular goiters, hyperthyroidism, Graves' disease, familial thyroid disease, thyroid cysts, and thyroid cancer.
- Parathyroid disease: Surgical management of benign and malignant parathyroid disease, including primary, secondary, and tertiary hyperparathyroidism, familial primary hyperparathyroidism, parathyroid cancer, and re-operative parathyroidectomy.
- Adrenal disease: Surgical management of benign and malignant adrenal conditions, including Cushing syndrome, hypercortisolism, primary aldosteronism, pheochromocytoma, and adrenal cancer.
- Minimally invasive surgery: Use of advanced laparoscopic and robotic techniques to optimize recovery while prioritizing surgical outcomes.
Research and academic focus
In addition to her clinical work, Dr. Lund is an active leader in research aimed at improving our approach to recruiting and training medical students and residents. Her program of research centers around the use of innovative simulation in surgical education and the development of surgical assessment tools. Dr. Lund has published numerous peer-reviewed articles related to surgical education, training outcomes, and endocrine disease management, and has presented nationally on optimizing medical training. She also educates and mentors medical students and residents, shaping them to become compassionate, caring physicians who deliver high-quality patient-centered care.
Dr. Lund earned her medical degree at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. She completed general surgery residency at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota and an endocrine surgery fellowship at the University of Michigan Medical Center. She also completed a Master of Health Professions Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, highlighting her commitment to the continued improvement of the medical education system. She has served on multiple education-based committees both at Mayo Clinic and nationally.
