W. Ray Kim, M.D., is a gastroenterologist specializing in hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Phoenix, Arizona. His clinical expertise is in general hepatology, advanced liver disease, and liver transplantation, providing care for patients with complex liver conditions and complications of liver failure.

As a part of Mayo Clinic's Liver Transplant team, he provides comprehensive care for patients being considered for liver transplantation and those requiring specialized hepatology expertise.

Dr. Kim completed advanced fellowship training in hepatology and liver transplantation at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is board-certified in gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine and has devoted his career to advancing the understanding, treatment and outcomes of liver disease.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Kim is an internationally recognized leader in hepatology and liver transplantation. He has led the Mayo Clinic research team that developed the Model for Endstage Liver Disease (MELD) score, a marker for medical urgency for liver transplantation. MELD, refined and updated by Dr. Kim's team since its introduction in 2002, has been the standard by which liver transplants are prioritized in the United States and many other systems.

Dr. Kim has held leadership roles within major liver disease organizations, including service as President of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, and has received numerous nation and international honors recognizing his contributions to the field.
