    Whiplash Treatment

    • Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a sudden force that rapidly moves the head forwards and backwards, stretching the muscles, ligaments and other soft tissues of the neck. It most commonly occurs following road traffic accidents, particularly rear-end collisions, but can also result from contact sports, falls or other traumatic injuries.

      Although many people recover within a few weeks, some experience persistent pain, stiffness or neurological symptoms that require specialist assessment and treatment.

    • Symptoms of whiplash can develop immediately after an injury or appear over the following hours or days. They may include:

      • Neck pain and stiffness

      • Reduced range of movement in the neck

      • Headaches, often beginning at the base of the skull

      • Shoulder or upper back pain

      • Pain or tingling that radiates into the arms

      • Muscle spasms

      • Dizziness

      • Fatigue

      • Difficulty concentrating or problems with memory

      • Disturbed sleep

      While many cases improve with conservative treatment, persistent or worsening symptoms should be assessed by a specialist. Early diagnosis can help identify more significant injuries and ensure you receive the most appropriate treatment. 

      You should also seek urgent medical attention if your symptoms include severe weakness, numbness, difficulty walking, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe neck pain following significant trauma.

    • Whiplash occurs when the neck is subjected to a sudden acceleration and deceleration force that overstretches the supporting soft tissues.

      Common causes include:

      • Road traffic collisions

      • Contact sports injuries

      • Falls

      • Cycling accidents

      • Physical assaults

      • Sudden impact during recreational activities

      Certain factors may increase the likelihood of prolonged symptoms, including:

      • Previous neck injuries

      • Existing neck pain or spinal conditions

      • Older age

      • High levels of initial pain or restricted movement

      • Previous episodes of persistent musculoskeletal pain

      Although whiplash primarily affects the muscles and ligaments of the neck, symptoms may occasionally involve nerves, the upper spine or surrounding structures.

    • At Mayo Clinic Healthcare, your assessment begins with a detailed consultation with one of our experienced consultants. They will discuss how your injury occurred, review your symptoms, examine your neck and neurological function, and determine whether further investigations are required.

      Many people with uncomplicated whiplash do not require imaging. However, advanced diagnostic tests may be recommended where clinically appropriate to exclude fractures, spinal instability or other injuries, or to investigate persistent symptoms.

      Investigations may include:

      • X-rays, which assess the bones of the cervical spine and help identify fractures or instability following injury

      • MRI scans, which provide detailed images of the muscles, ligaments, spinal discs and nerves, particularly when symptoms persist or neurological signs are present

      • CT scans, which may be recommended following more significant trauma to evaluate the bones of the neck in greater detail

      • Neurological assessment, where symptoms such as numbness, weakness or altered sensation require further specialist evaluation

      Your consultant will recommend only the investigations that are appropriate for your symptoms and clinical findings, ensuring a personalised and efficient diagnostic pathway.

    • Whiplash treatment depends on the severity of your symptoms, how long they have been present and whether any associated injuries are identified. Our consultants develop an individualised treatment plan designed to relieve pain, restore movement and support your recovery.

      Treatment for whiplash may include:

      • Advice on maintaining normal activity where appropriate

      • Pain-relieving medications to help manage discomfort

      • Anti-inflammatory medication, when clinically suitable

      • A structured physiotherapy and rehabilitation programme to improve movement, strength and flexibility

      • Specialist pain management for persistent or complex symptoms

      • Targeted exercise programmes to restore neck function

      • Referral to other specialists where neurological or other associated conditions are identified
