Motility
Our consultants are experts in conditions that affect how food moves through the digestive system from the mouth to the colon.

A number of GI conditions are caused by changes in motility. Some of the more common include:
- Difficult constipation caused by slow movements of the bowel or trouble passing stool.
- Faecal incontinence.
- Functional bowel conditions.
- Functional or non-ulcer dyspepsia (NUD).
- Gastroparesis, which involves food emptying out of the stomach too slowly. Symptoms of the condition can be acid reflux, bloating, nausea, vomiting and not wanting to eat.
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
- Pseudo-obstruction, which involves gastric and intestinal motility. Symptoms of the condition include all of the above as well as distension, abdominal pain, undernutrition and weight loss.
- Undiagnosed diarrheal syndromes.
Though some of these conditions do not have well-defined causes or specific therapies, our highly focused treatments — developed and tested by Mayo Clinic experts — can ease symptoms and improve quality of life.
