I am a cancer patient. What should I do to protect myself from COVID-19?

Because cancer treatments weaken the body's immune system, cancer patients are among those at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19. To protect yourself from COVID-19, follow Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for people who need to take extra precautions.

Is it safe for cancer patients and cancer survivors to receive the COVID-19 vaccine?

Mayo Clinic recommends cancer patients and cancer survivors get vaccinated as soon as possible. Patients should discuss any concerns they have about being vaccinated for COVID-19 with their health care provider.

Should I wear a face mask?

Because so many people receiving cancer care are immunocompromised, they may request a mask and are encouraged to wear it throughout their entire health care visit, for their own protection.

In addition, please continue to follow the CDC's recommendations for people at high risk of COVID-19.

I need to fly to Mayo Clinic for chemotherapy. Is it safe to do so?

Mayo Clinic recommends following CDC recommendations for travel during COVID-19.

Depending on your circumstances, your care team may recommend that you seek care closer to home or seek temporary housing close to your Mayo Clinic location. Talk to your care team about what is best for you.

I need to travel to Mayo Clinic to participate in a cancer clinical trial. Is it safe to do so?

Talk to your study team about any concerns you have about traveling to participate in a clinical trial.
