Biographical summary
Maria Isabel Vazquez Roque, M.D., M.S., is a gastroenterologist specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of recurrent Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) infection, fecal microbiota transplantation (fecal transplant), pelvic floor disorders, and celiac disease. She serves as a Consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology and Associate Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. Dr. Vazquez Roque is board-certified in Gastroenterology and has dedicated her career to advancing care for patients with complex gastrointestinal conditions, with particular expertise in disorders of the gut microbiome and gastrointestinal motility.
Dr. Vazquez Roque is recognized for her specialized expertise in managing recurrent and difficult-to-treat C. difficile infections and has performed more than 300 fecal transplants, making her one of the region's most experienced physicians in this area. Her clinical and research interests focus on the role of the gut microbiome in health and disease, including immune checkpoint inhibitor colitis and innovative microbiome-based therapies such as fecal microbiota transplantation. She has led and participated in numerous clinical research studies investigating treatments for recurrent C. difficile infection and related gastrointestinal disorders.
Dr. Vazquez Roque believes that restoring digestive health means addressing both physical symptoms and the emotional toll that chronic gastrointestinal conditions can create. She understands that recurrent C. difficile infections can lead to significant stress, uncertainty, and fear about future episodes. Her goal is to provide personalized, evidence-based care that helps patients regain confidence, return to normal activities, and improve their overall quality of life. As she explains, "Patients with recurrent C. difficile infection have a significant decline in quality of life and experience significant health anxiety. My goal is to help restore their quality of life and reassure them that there is hope in gaining back control of their life and health."
Outside of her clinical practice, Dr. Vazquez Roque enjoys food, cooking from scratch, and spending time with her family.
