Biographical summary
Eric S. Semmel, Ph.D., L.P., is a licensed clinical neuropsychologist with expertise in the neuropsychological assessment of children, adolescents, and young adults. He is an Assistant Professor of
Psychology at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine and Science.
Dr. Semmel completed his graduate training in clinical psychology, with a concentration in neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience, at Georgia State University. He went on to complete his internship at Emory University School of Medicine and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and his post-doctoral fellowship in pediatric neuropsychology at Mayo Clinic.
Clinically, Dr. Semmel focuses on two primary areas:
- Epilepsy: Dr. Semmel completes pre- and post-surgical assessments for patients being considered for surgical intervention. He also has an interest in functional mapping using sEEG as well as intraoperative mapping during awake craniotomy.
- Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation: Dr. Semmel sees patients following acquired brain injuries (e.g., traumatic brain injury, stroke) for assessment and consultation across the spectrum of recovery.
Dr. Semmel's research focuses on improving early identification of patients at risk for poor functional outcomes. He is interested in using multivariate patient risk profiles — including medical/disease characteristics, neuropsychological testing, neuroimaging, genetic markers, and socioeconomic factors to build more robust models of risk and resilience.
