Biographical summary
J.D. LeGout, M.D., is a fellowship-trained Diagnostic Radiologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. He is an expert in imaging techniques of the abdomen and pelvis with subspecialty focus in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Main areas of interest include MRI of the liver, bile ducts, pancreas, and prostate. He currently acts as the Modality Director of MRI in Florida.
Since joining Mayo Clinic in 2016, Dr. LeGout has been a leader in abdominopelvic MRI and is passionate about protocol development, improvements in image quality, and development of advanced sequences and techniques. From Dr. LeGout: "Our patients come from everywhere, often seeking a second or even third opinion for highly complex problems. For most, getting the right answers starts in Radiology. Bad Radiology leads to bad clinical decisions, which leads to bad outcomes, so it's critical that we get the Radiology right. The wide variance in MRI image quality and quality of image interpretation is often underappreciated by patients but can have a profound impact on their care. At Mayo Clinic, our goal is nothing short of providing the highest quality, most cutting-edge MRI in the world, to provide our patients and physicians with the best possible answers to their questions."
Dr. LeGout earned his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, earning AOA honors, and completed Radiology residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where he served as chief resident. He then pursued an MRI predominant Body Imaging Fellowship at Northwestern University.
Dr. LeGout takes a patient-centered approach to Radiology and has been awarded Clinical Radiologist of the Year by his colleagues. "Radiologists are usually behind the scenes. Most patients won't ever see us or speak to us directly," says Dr. LeGout. "But the emphasis on multi-disciplinary care and collaboration that we have at Mayo Clinic means that we are actively involved in care and decision-making. We take great pride in being clinically engaged and readily available whenever our expertise can be of benefit to our patients."
Outside of work, Dr. LeGout enjoys saltwater fishing, college sports, traveling, and spending quality time with his wife and two children.
