Biographical summary
Victoria Gómez, M.D., FASGE, D-ABOM, is Professor of Medicine and a board-certified gastroenterologist, obesity medicine specialist, and Consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. She serves as Director of Bariatric Endoscopy and Program Director for the Advanced Endoscopy Fellowship.
Dr. Gómez specializes in nonsurgical weight loss treatments and the management of obesity and weight-related health conditions, with a particular focus on patients seeking
alternatives to bariatric surgery or treatment for complications after weight loss surgery. She is one of the few physicians with specialized expertise in obesity medicine, bariatric endoscopy, and advanced interventional endoscopy, allowing her to care for patients with complex anatomy and challenging gastrointestinal conditions.
Dr. Gómez performs a range of minimally invasive endoscopic weight loss procedures, including endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty with fundal ablation, intragastric balloon placement and removal, and transoral outlet reduction (TORe) for weight regain after gastric bypass surgery. She also treats complications after bariatric surgery, including dumping syndrome,
ulcers at surgical connections, narrowing of the stomach after sleeve gastrectomy, difficulty swallowing, fistulas, and bile duct stones in patients who have undergone Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Her expertise also includes EDGE procedures and other advanced endoscopic techniques that can help patients avoid more invasive surgical interventions.
In addition to her bariatric practice, Dr. Gómez is an expert in advanced therapeutic endoscopy. Her clinical interests include pancreatic and biliary disorders, endoscopic ultrasound, ERCP, pancreatic duct stone treatment with endoscopic lithotripsy as well as extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (ESWL), pancreatic cysts and tumors, and the evaluation and treatment of complex gastrointestinal conditions requiring specialized endoscopic care.
Dr. Gómez was born in Santiago, Chile and moved to Texas at a young age. As a bilingual physician fluent in English and Spanish, she values clear communication and strong partnerships with her patients. She graduated with Highest Honors and Alpha Omega Alpha distinction from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas. She completed her Internal Medicine residency and Gastroenterology fellowship training at Mayo Clinic in Florida and Minnesota. She previously served as Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Mayo Clinic and has held national
leadership roles within the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE), including past Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Committee and now Councilor on the ASGE Governing Board. She was the 2026 recipient of the ASGE Distinguished Educator Award. She is currently the Belonging and Engagement Champion for the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mayo Clinic in Florida.
A nationally recognized educator and researcher, Dr. Gómez has been invited to speak at medical conferences around the world on advanced endoscopy and bariatric endoscopy. Her research focuses on outcomes of endoscopic bariatric therapies, including multicenter studies evaluating weight loss outcomes and the use of endoscopic treatments in patients with advanced heart, liver, and
other organ diseases awaiting transplantation. She is also helping to advance new endoscopic approaches that expand treatment options for patients with obesity and complications related to bariatric surgery.
"It is a sincere privilege to be part of my patients' care," says Dr. Gómez. "Conversations about weight can be deeply personal, and patients often place themselves in vulnerable positions when seeking help. I strive to create an environment where patients feel comfortable telling their story, asking questions, and working together to find solutions that help them live healthier, happier lives. Finding answers for patients whose concerns have been dismissed or who have been told there are no options available continues to inspire and challenge me every day."
Outside of work, Dr. Gómez enjoys playing tennis, traveling with her family, and staying active with her four sons. Her lifelong passion for health, nutrition, and wellness began as a competitive soccer player and continues to shape her approach to patient care.
