Arthur Beyder, M.D., Ph.D.

Arthur Beyder, M.D., Ph.D., is a gastroenterologist and internist at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a consultant in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and has a joint appointment in the Department of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering. Dr. Beyder is board-certified in internal medicine and gastroenterology and is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Physiology at Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Beyder cares for patients with gastrointestinal motility disorders and disorders of gut-brain interaction, including irritable bowel syndrome, functional dyspepsia and gastrointestinal mechanosensory dysfunction, like visceral hypersensitivity. He sees patients in the motility clinic and performs colonoscopy, upper endoscopy and intestinal manometry. His approach combines comprehensive clinical evaluation with an understanding of how the gastrointestinal tract senses physical forces, coordinates movement and communicates with the nervous system.

Research and professional highlights

Dr. Beyder directs Mayo Clinic's NIH-funded Gastrointestinal Mechanotransduction Laboratory. His research examines how mechanosensitive ion channels are involved in gastrointestinal tract health and disease. Specifically, his group discovered specialized enteroendocrine "gut touch" sensors allow the gastrointestinal tract to detect a range of tactile-like forces involved in stretch, pressure and intestinal movements. His team also studies gastrointestinal smooth muscle mechanosensitivity and the changes in smooth muscle function with age. Finally, Dr. Beyder's group has an eye on translation of discoveries to patient care, specifically through development of artificial intelligence (AI) approaches for analyzing complex gastrointestinal motility data.

The goal of this work is to translate discoveries about gastrointestinal mechanobiology into more precise, mechanism-based diagnoses and targeted treatments for people with gastrointestinal motility disorders and disorders of gut-brain interaction. His laboratory's work has contributed to three U.S. patents.

Dr. Beyder's research has received national recognition, including the National Institutes of Health Director's New Innovator Award and the American Gastroenterological Association Young Investigator Award. He mentors physician-scientists and researchers and currently serves as vice chair of the American Gastroenterological Association’s Cellular and Molecular Gastroenterology section.
