Steven P. Petrou, M.D., is a urologist at Mayo Clinic hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, who specializes in treating incontinence and voiding dysfunction in men and women. He is an expert in minimally invasive
placement of male slings, and placing artificial urinary sphincters — including replacement or repair of existing devices — in men. For the female patient, Dr. Petrou is an expert in treating all facets of incontinence, especially patients who have failed previous operations and wish to explore options for therapy.
Dr. Petrou earned his medical degree from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee, followed by an internship in general surgery and a residency in the Department of Urology at the
University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington. He then completed a fellowship in incontinence and prosthetic surgery at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Rochester, Minnesota.
Dr. Petrou is recognized internationally for his work in the field of female urethral disorders, including patients with known urethral strictures or narrowing, or those wishing to avoid the need for repeat urethral dilations. He has been recognized as one of the Best Doctors in America by Best Doctors Incorporated, and is past president of the prestigious Society of Southern Urologic Surgeons. He has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications and multiple book chapters. Dr. Petrou is a member of the American Urological Association, the Society for Urodynamics and Female Urology, and is certified by the American Board of
