Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Also, because of the way this medicine acts on the body, there is a chance that it might cause other unwanted effects that may not occur until months or years after the medicine is used. Some patients who have used toremifene have developed cancer of the uterus (womb), although it is not known for sure if it was caused by the medicine. Discuss this possible effect with your doctor.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

Less common

  1. Abdominal or stomach pain
  2. anxiety
  3. arm, back, or jaw pain
  4. blurred vision
  5. change in vaginal discharge
  6. changes in skin color
  7. changes in vision
  8. chest pain or discomfort
  9. chest tightness or heaviness
  10. confusion
  11. constipation
  12. cough
  13. decreased urine output
  14. depression
  15. dilated neck veins
  16. dizziness or lightheadedness
  17. dry mouth
  18. extreme fatigue
  19. fainting
  20. fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat
  21. headache
  22. inability to speak incoherent speech
  23. increased urination
  24. irregular breathing
  25. irregular heartbeat
  26. loss of appetite
  27. metallic taste
  28. muscle weakness
  29. nausea
  30. pain or discomfort in the arms, jaw, back, or neck
  31. pain or feeling of pressure in the pelvis
  32. pain, tenderness, or swelling of the foot or leg
  33. seizures
  34. severe or sudden headache
  35. shortness of breath
  36. slurred speech
  37. sudden shortness of breath or troubled breathing
  38. sweating
  39. swelling of the face, fingers, feet, or lower legs
  40. temporary blindness
  41. tenderness, pain, swelling, warmth, skin discoloration, and prominent superficial veins over the affected area
  42. thirst
  43. tightness in the chest
  44. troubled breathing
  45. unusual tiredness
  46. vaginal bleeding
  47. vomiting
  48. weakness in the arm and/or leg on one side of the body, sudden and severe
  49. weight gain
  50. weight loss
  51. wheezing


  1. Chest pain

Incidence not known

  1. Black, tarry stools
  2. bleeding gums
  3. blood in the urine or stools
  4. chills
  5. clay-colored stools
  6. dark urine
  7. dizziness
  8. fever
  9. headache
  10. itching
  11. painful or difficult urination
  12. pinpoint red spots on the skin
  13. rash
  14. sore throat
  15. sores, ulcers, or white spots on the lips or in the mouth
  16. swollen glands
  17. unpleasant breath odor
  18. unusual bleeding or bruising
  19. unusual tiredness or weakness
  20. vomiting of blood
  21. yellow eyes or skin

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

More common

  1. Blindness
  2. decreased vision
  3. dry eyes
  4. feeling of warmth
  5. redness of the face, neck, arms, and occasionally, upper chest
  6. sudden sweating
  7. sweating
  8. white or brownish vaginal discharge

Less common

  1. Bone pain
  2. changes in vision
  3. double vision
  4. eye pain
  5. tearing

Incidence not known

  1. Blistering, crusting, irritation, itching, or reddening of the skin
  2. cracked, dry, or scaly skin
  3. depression
  4. difficulty having a bowel movement (stool)
  5. dizziness or lightheadedness
  6. feeling of constant movement of self or surroundings
  7. feeling unusually cold
  8. hair loss
  9. itching skin
  10. lack or loss of strength
  11. partial or slight paralysis
  12. sensation of spinning
  13. shakiness in the legs, arms, hands, or feet
  14. shivering
  15. thinning of the hair
  16. trembling or shaking of the hands or feet
