Side Effects

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor or nurse immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

More common

  1. Back pain
  2. black, tarry stools
  3. blistering, peeling, or loosening of the skin
  4. chest pain or tightness
  5. chills
  6. constipation
  7. cough
  8. dark urine
  9. depressed mood
  10. diarrhea
  11. dry skin and hair
  12. feeling cold
  13. fever
  14. flushing
  15. hair loss
  16. headache
  17. hoarseness or husky voice
  18. itching
  19. joint or muscle pain
  20. light-colored stools
  21. muscle cramps and stiffness
  22. nausea and vomiting
  23. nervousness
  24. painful or difficult urination
  25. red irritated eyes
  26. red skin lesions, often with a purple center
  27. sensitivity to heat
  28. slowed heartbeat
  29. sore throat
  30. sores, ulcers, or white spots in the mouth or on the lips
  31. stomach cramps, pain, or tenderness
  32. sweating
  33. swollen glands
  34. trouble breathing
  35. trouble sleeping
  36. unusual bleeding or bruising
  37. unusual tiredness and weakness
  38. upper right abdominal or stomach pain
  39. watery or bloody diarrhea
  40. weight loss or gain
  41. yellow eyes and skin

Less common

  1. Bloody or cloudy urine
  2. chest discomfort
  3. darkening of the skin
  4. decrease in urine output or decrease in urine-concentrating ability
  5. dizziness
  6. fainting
  7. fast heartbeat
  8. loss of appetite
  9. mental depression
  10. muscle spasms
  11. pain or discomfort in the arms, jaw, back or neck
  12. pale skin
  13. seeing flashes or sparks of light
  14. seeing floating spots before the eyes, or a veil or curtain appearing across part of vision
  15. skin rash
  16. swelling of the face, feet, or lower legs
  17. swelling or redness in the joints
  18. thickening of bronchial secretions

Rare

  1. Anxiety
  2. back, leg, or stomach pains
  3. bleeding gums
  4. bloating
  5. blue or pale skin
  6. blurred vision
  7. burning, tingling, numbness or pain in the hands, arms, feet, or legs
  8. burning feeling in the chest or stomach
  9. chest pain, possibly moving to the left arm, neck, or shoulder
  10. confusion
  11. difficulty in breathing, chewing, swallowing, or talking
  12. double vision
  13. drooping eyelids
  14. drowsiness
  15. dry mouth
  16. eye pain
  17. fruit-like breath odor
  18. heavier menstrual periods
  19. inability to move the arms and legs
  20. increased hunger
  21. increased thirst
  22. increased urination
  23. indigestion
  24. irritability
  25. loss of consciousness
  26. muscle weakness
  27. nosebleeds
  28. pains in the stomach, side, or abdomen, possibly radiating to the back
  29. pinpoint red spots on the skin
  30. redness, soreness, or itching skin
  31. redness of the eye
  32. seizures
  33. sensation of pins and needles
  34. sensitivity of the eyes to light
  35. stabbing pain
  36. stiff neck or back
  37. stomach upset
  38. sudden numbness and weakness in the arms and legs
  39. swollen, painful, or tender lymph glands in the neck, armpit, or groin
  40. tearing

Some side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.
