Advanced diagnosis and treatment
Mayo Clinic surgeons are highly experienced in treating pituitary tumors. They offer many treatment options, including:
Mayo Clinic endocrinologists also are leaders in treating hormone-producing pituitary tumors and in providing pituitary hormone replacement therapy.
Some ACTH-producing pituitary tumors in people with Cushing syndrome are so small that regular MRI scans may miss them. Mayo Clinic's high-field, 3-tesla MRI scanner provides better viewing of these tumors.
Mayo Clinic's neuroradiologists also have experience with a test called inferior petrosal sinus sampling. This test helps find and identify pituitary tumors by taking a sample from the veins where the pituitary gland drains hormones into the bloodstream.
Mayo Clinic was among the first institutions to extensively research an endoscopic through-the-nose (transnasal) surgical tumor removal technique. It has now become standard practice. This method is highly successful, causes less discomfort and usually requires only an overnight stay in the hospital.
